오바마의 연설과 마틴 루터 킹

오바마 후보수락 순간 환호와 눈물 교차, 21세기 약속 통해 킹 목사 꿈 되살려

오늘 (미국시간 2008년 8월 28일) 미국 민주당 전당대회에서 미국 최초의 흑인 대통령후보인 버락 오바마의 연설이 있었다고 합니다. 유튜브에 올라온 그의 연설은 참 여러가지를 생각하게 해 줍니다. 아마 오늘 오바마의 연설의 제목을 뽑는다면 "WE ARE BETTER" 또는 "NOW IS THE TIME"정도가 될 수 있을 것 같습니다. 미국 언론들 웹사이트를 슬쩍 들러보니 언론사마다 모두 다른 제목을 뽑았더군요.

그런데 맨 위 기사의 내용 중에 이런 부분이 있네요.

`마일 하이'의 도시인 덴버에서 만들어지는 역사의 현장을 지켜보기 위해 조지아 주 애틀랜타에서 왔다는 올해 65세인 맥 윌부란(사업)은 "오늘이 마틴 루터 킹 목사가 '나에게 꿈이 있어요'라는 연설을 한 지 45주년이 되는 날이라 오바마의 후보 수락연설의 역사적 의미가 더 크게 느껴진다"고 말했다.

맞습니다. 마틴 루터 킹 목사는 1929년생으로 지금 살아있었다면 나이가 80이 안됩니다. 우리나라의 YS, DJ 두 전직 대통령보다 오히려 더 어립니다. 킹 목사의 부인인 코레타 킹 여사는 지난 2006년에 세상을 떠났고 당시 죠지아 뿐만 아니라 미국 전역에 큰 뉴스였습니다.

그런데 의외로 사람들이 킹 목사의 시대는 훨씬 오래 전이라고 생각을 합니다. 제가 지냈던 동네가 킹 목사와 카터 대통령을 배출 했다는 죠지아 였는데 그 동네의 나이든 백인 할머니 할아버지들은 아마 젊어서까지 흑인들과 같이 식사도 안하고 버스도 타지 않았을 것입니다. 하지만 그 사이 세월이 많이 바뀌었죠. 가끔은 그 양반들은 과연 어떤 일생을 살았을까 궁금하기도 했습니다.

간혹 영문법 책에서 독해 지문으로 접할 수 있는 킹 목사의 그 유명한 연설 "I HAVE A DREAM"은 1963년 8월 28일, 워싱턴 DC의 링컨기념관 앞에서 행해진 연설입니다. 그러니 지금 나이가 50세 정도 이상의 미국 흑인들은 저 연설을 직접, 간접으로 들었을 것입니다. 과연 그 사람들의 감격은 어느 정도 일까요? 과연 오바마가 본선에서 승리할 수 있을지 아닌지는 잘 모르겠지만 미국이 새로운 역사의 한 순간에 서 있다는 것은 분명해 보입니다.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal."

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

This is our hope, and this is the faith that I go back to the South with.

With this faith, we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith, we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith, we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.

And this will be the day -- this will be the day when all of God's children will be able to sing with new meaning:

My country 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing.

Land where my fathers died, land of the Pilgrim's pride,

From every mountainside, let freedom ring!

And if America is to be a great nation, this must become true.

And so let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire.

Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York.

Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania.

Let freedom ring from the snow-capped Rockies of Colorado.

Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California.

But not only that:

Let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia.

Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee.

Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi.

From every mountainside, let freedom ring.
